Find stocks “moving away from prices”

In a mentee’s review yesterday he made this interesting point:

–          I really could have done a better job of taking advantage of the last move into the close.. I was too focused on that SFLY that wasn’t really moving away from prices and didn’t shop around enough for some longs for the close

While waiting at the bar for my wife at David Burke Kitchen in Soho I responded:

You make a good point here about your trading into the close. You must keep looking around if you recognize your position isn’t moving. If it hasn’t really moved during the first part of the close you must keep looking. Keep pushing to find that set up that is worthy of your trading attention. Good to recognize a characteristic of when to look for another stock- not moving away from prices– not starting a 3 pm trend.
