Choosing a Book Title

BellaGeneral Comments, Mike Bellafiore's (Bella's) Blogs40 Comments

I am now at the end of the process for my trading book with Wiley.  My book discusses why traders fail and succeed as prop traders.  It offers an inside looking into the highly competitive world of proprietary trading.   I share what the market has taught me over the past twelve years.  I introduce characters, traders some who have succeeded and some who have failed to highlight market lessons. The Tentative Title has been The Way of the Prop Trader: Tools and Techniques of a Proprietary Trading Firm.

Other titles being considered are 1) One Good Trade: Inside the Highly Competitive World of Proprietary Trading;2) Education of a Prop Trader: From the Floor of a Proprietary Trading Firm;  3)The Way of the Prop Trader:  From Inside a Proprietary Trading Firm; 4) The Essentials of Prop Trading: An Inside Look at Proprietary Trading on Wall Street.

I have until Friday to lock down the title.  If you have another suggestion or comment please share.

Writing a book is so much more than writing the book.

Best of luck with your trading!

  1. How about a combination of two of your choices?

The Way of the Prop Trader: An Inside Look at Proprietary Trading on Wall Street.

I think these two gel with each other and tease about discovering insights into the world of prop trading.

    Good Luck with the book,

    Joey

  3. “The Way of the Prop Trader” is key for the first half of the title and for the second half, I would go with either the original choice, the post above or “An Inside Look at the Tools and Techniques of a Proprietary Trading Firm”

  11. Don’t care for “Way of” or “Education of”. Both have been used recently, see “Way of the Turtle” and “Education of a Speculator”. “Way of” is particularly odious to me as it seems to want to impart a certain zen or mystical aura to trading, a theme I find quite played out and truly lame.

I humbly submit, “Prop Shop: An Inside Look at Proprietary Trading on Wall Street.”

  19. I am for #1. The adjectives ‘good’ and ‘competitive’ are nice foils against each other. Also the adjective good being the second word hits you right away with positive sentiment.

  21. Short, sweet and memorable for “word of mouth” reviews and the progeny of the trading community: “Inside the Bar” – “Traders Behind the Curtain” — “Confessions from Oz” – “China Shop: Batter Up”.

Go for the metaphor title – I can visualize Oprah and the CNBC pimps saying the title now: think “sound bite”. And, if you haven’t already thought about “that”, you should.

  29. I like tentative and No. 1. #2 is third choice.

I don’t like 3 and 4 because the title would not appeal enough to me to look beyond the title.

I also like “It’s called trading” but that means something from your blog and might not mean as much to those who don’t read the blog.

‘Course I’ll buy the book no matter what it is titled.
