Stealing from Jimmer Fredette

Jimmer Fredette is considered one of the leading candidates to be named Naismith College Player of the Year. I watched him play last night against SDSU. What a treat to watch someone with such advanced skill compete in an important game. Recently I caught his interview on PTI (below) and was struck by his training practices to become one of the country’s elite basketball players.

1. His brother and Jimmer developed a unique drill of dribbling in the dark to improve his handle.

2. His brother organized games against prison inmates which helped make him more “mentally tough.”

3. Jimmer signed a contract like this as a teenager:

I__________________ will make all necessary and proper sacrifices to reach my ultimate goal of making it to the NBA.

________________                               ______________________

Name (Signature)                                      Witness (Signature)

4. This contract was taped above his bed and he looked at it every night before he went to bed.

5. While in bed he fell asleep visualizing himself in the NBA.

Consider copying/stealing some of Jimmer’s training techniques for your trading.

  1. dang, i woulda liked to have seen that game. 43 big ones.

west coast games too late for me.

  2. Wow! Exactly what I did when studying to become a pilot, had those taped on each wall of every room of the house, with all the things to remember for the interview (no jokes). Did that for a full year…it worked! I got the airline job 😉
Thanks for sharing and reminding us of these great tools!!!!

  3. Mike, thanks for sharing this.

I always recommend doing a visualization exercise right before going sleep and therefore leverage the brain’s hypnagogic state, which occurs right before sleep onset. In that brain state our thought processes differ and we are more receptive to suggestion, and perhaps a loosening of ego boundaries. The hyponagogoc state has also been associated with many extraordinary achievements by artists, scientists, and inventors.

Other particularly good times for visualization include first thing in the morning upon waking and right before trading. Part of the of the efficacy of visualization includes the effects on our subconscious process…and because sleep is associated with the subconscious, anything we can do that gets close to the subconscious has a better chance of creating a lasting impact.
