One Of My Favorite Plays

Sep 3rd, 2010 | By | Category: Steven Spencer (Steve's) Blogs, Trading Ideas
When I was younger I played a lot of pickup basketball.  Many times I was matched up against players who were either bigger, stronger or quicker than me.  Well maybe not stronger :)  I found playing "up" to my competition was much more enjoyable than playing "down".  Playing better competition tends to heighten your focus and forces you to improve as a player.  I would make mental notes about various opponents so if I faced them in the future I was better prepared to take away their strengths and exploit their weaknesses. In trading you don't necessarily want to find the toughest competition.  It is not necessary nor desirable Read more [...]

My Book is Sold Out: A Social Media Tale

Aug 29th, 2010 | By | Category: Mike Bellafiore's (Bella's) Blogs
My book One Good Trade is sold out. This took three weeks. A rush reprint will be underway soon. Save a few exceptions, it is now only available on the Kindle. I was told, "This has never happened before with a trading book." This is a social media tale. I considered hiring a PR firm to rep my book before release, pitching all things traditional media. One charismatic and powerful NYC book agent explained to me that my project would only be worth her time if I became a star TV Talking Head. When she learned I wasn't the one from our firm regularly on CNBC suddenly she had to take another call. I left thinking- isn't it Read more [...]

Book Review of One Good Trade from CrossHairsTrader

Aug 4th, 2010 | By | Category: General Comments
CrossHairsTrader wrote this thorough review of One Good Trade: Inside the Highly Competitive World of Proprietary Trading (Wiley Trading): When I assess the quality of a book I ask myself four questions: 1. Did the author teach me something I did not already know? 2. Did the author reinforce much of what I already know? 3. Did the author leave me with the desire to learn more? 4. Do I believe others can gain from the author’s insights? If I can answer in the affirmative to all four then the author has provided me something of value worth much more than the discounted Amazon price. I informed Mike Read more [...]

One Good Trade: The Prequel

Aug 2nd, 2010 | By | Category: Mike Bellafiore's (Bella's) Blogs
“You have to have an idea of what you are going to do, but it should be a vague idea.” Pablo Picasso SMB Capital started as just an idea. "Hey what if we focused on building an elite training program for new traders. The markets are much more complicated than when we began," pitched a future co-founder. Then two experienced traders made One Good Trade, trading only trading and all its freedom for trading and building a firm, with the grueling schedule of a contested presidential primary. They were boyhood friends, both with law degrees, a decade of trading experience, but with very different talents. There was never Read more [...]
