This post is the third in a series that we will be publishing over the next several weeks, tracking the hypothetical performance of the bearish butterfly trade as it would have been handled according to our guidelines contained in SMB’s Bearish Butterfly Video Series.

As of our last writing , the $RUT index closed at 828 and the trade was down 12% on planned capital with 37 days before expiration. This week the $RUT has been rangebound as has the rest of the market. It has been trading in the range of 815 and 830. The passage of time has helped the position considerably as we are net short options and the time decay of a calm week worked to our advantage. Currently the $RUT is trading at 823 and the position is now down 4.5% on planned capital with 29 days to expiration. The current risk graph looks like this:

As you can see, the trade is well positioned and will not need adjustment without a large move in one direction or the other. Should the market sell off hard, we’ll remove the upper butterfly to cut deltas. Should the market rally hard, we’ll roll the lowest butterfly upwards “leapfrogging” it over the rest of the position.

Stay tuned for our next move……

Unlike an actual performance record, simulated results do not represent actual trading. Since, also, the trades have not actually been executed; the results may have been under or over compensated for the impact, if any, of certain market factors such as liquidity, slippage and commissions.
