But then he said something even more savvy and congruent with our development philosophy at SMB Capital.<\/p>\n<p>Being around elite traders is the key to building your own unique trading career with your own personal strategies. Max shared that &#8220;everyone trades a little bit differently.&#8221;\u00a0 You sit next to elite traders, like Shark, you try their strategies and learn how they trade.\u00a0 You experiment with different strategies with edge.\u00a0 What Max observed next is that key.\u00a0 He teaches the trading community, &#8220;that is what let&#8217;s you build your own ideas and then build out who you are as a trader.&#8221;\u00a0 You make these existing profitable strategies from elite traders your own.\u00a0 You tweak these existing strategies from highly profitable traders to make them work for you.\u00a0 You are able to generate new trading ideas that work for you because you know what winning ones look like from winning traders.<\/p>\n<p>You are building your unique trading career from the previous winning of other winning traders.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"YouTube video player\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/CwA5U7_OnDI\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><br \/>\nI asked two of our interns to create show notes from Max&#8217;s interview.\u00a0 They follow below.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Show notes:\u00a0 \u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Max\u2019s trading now is totally different compared to when he first started out\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The benefit of starting out young (9th grade) is being able to see more price action, being able to see\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and interpret more headlines, and being able to witness different periods of volatility\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Starting off with options trading is a way for individuals to get into the market with less capital compared to actual stock trading\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Max became profitable with binary options within 6 months to 1 year and allowed him to build up a safety net. This also allowed him to feel more comfortable going into prop trading\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Began prop trading and joined SMB Capital at 22 years old\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Max joined Team Shark when he got into the firm\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Shark is really down to earth and willing to share ideas\/be your mentor <\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There is a complete difference between how people trade on social media and how people trade in a prop firm\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Drawing a chart pattern and playing the breakout with a stop below is a very plain vanilla way to trade\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Max never tries to draw down with the firm more than 1-2 daily stops\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A really good day is when he makes 75% to 100% of a daily stop. An average day of losing is around a quarter stop\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">3 or 4 moments since being here, almost 20 months of being live, that has allowed him to jump in terms of risk\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are also a few points where he is flat or slightly red, which is fine <\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Max started trading with the firm 2 months before Covid. So he started in a market that was slow, for his training, and then volatility in the market went crazy, then slowing back down\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you started in Covid and never saw VIX below 30, it can be pretty hard to adjust to different market environments\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He\u2019s very humbled by reaching the green shirt status, which is making 7-figure profits in one trading year, because he never expected it to come so quickly. It was a 5 year goal and not an 18-month goal.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He wants to be an 8-figure earner this next year or the following year\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He understands that things may change as well but wants to be ambitious and push non-stop whenever it\u2019s possible\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He\u2019s there to keep himself busy\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Be smart with your risk management\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A \u201csocial media\u201d breakout strategy is now a strategy if you\u2019re able to add your edge of watching the tape and seeing how the stock behaves at the level\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Inflection points speak more volume relating to importance at a key level.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bumping up risk is something that traders, including Max, have had problems with but shouldn\u2019t be something that eats you up at night, as long as the risk management is still there\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Just talk to yourself about things relating to the trade\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Max\u2019s current stop is 40x-60x compared to what it originally started at <\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You can make 3-4x your stop in a month and get a decent sized risk bump <\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Max is on his way to obtaining the next shirt, black, which is $2m in net profits <\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Max wishes he had the same mentality he does now with the strict guidelines compared to when he first started out\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Imagine going into the 2020 market with an advanced view of the market and strict structure. Those opportunities and market conditions can lead to life changing money <\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A 50% win rate leads to success if you cut losers quicker and take quick scratches\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Most traders are in the 40-50% win rate. Most successful traders won\u2019t have their largest loss outweigh their largest win\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Win rate might not necessarily matter (feelers, taking quick losses if something isn\u2019t working, etc.)\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You\u2019re average price in a trade is going to matter significantly <\/span><\/li>\n<li>\u00a0Guidelines &#8211; overall structure when it comes to trades, execution, and risk management<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Quotes from Interview<\/b><b>\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><b> <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cCultivate your own ideas.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThere\u2019s no better feedback mechanism than being either green or red.\u201d <\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThere\u2019s no guarantee that you\u2019ll do well.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cSlow yourself down when things go poorly.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cBeing able to learn from more senior traders and being able to kind of be in that structured, professional environment is something that breeds that constant success.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThat\u2019s one of the greatest advantages in a prop firm is that once you\u2019re in here, you\u2019re instantly with 7-figure traders who are proven to be successful and you get exposure to profitable ways of trading by being able to witness all these strategies or ways to think about the market.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cEveryone trades a little bit differently.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cYou have to try different things and put yourself in that position and the way to do that is to be exposed to people that are doing those various strategies.\u201d<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cPeople might think that coming into a team that is doing well will be a lot of stress but you\u2019d be surprised at how friendly it is and how everyone is sharing their edge. It\u2019s very collaborative and that\u2019s the environment which allows you to become successful\/very quickly at that.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIf everyone could just go out and buy the breakout, and put your stop at the low, then everyone would be rich.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cStructuring a trade, whether it\u2019s through options or pure equity, gives prop firm traders a better edge compared to what you see on Twitter.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI\u2019m almost never stopping out.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIt\u2019s a lot easier getting accustomed to bigger numbers if you\u2019re not instantly going there.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIf you\u2019re really going to be in this kind of job, you need to have that Type A mentality.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI\u2019ve seen it where I\u2019ve tried to go for that Home run and it turns out being detrimental.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI like to try to constantly think through different ideas and map out different scenarios.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cPeople (at the firm) develop a way of reading price action and reading tape. That is why they have an edge.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI\u2019m there to react when I really see something but I have that intuition inside that I know that if it\u2019s not right, or the volume isn\u2019t there, or it\u2019s not acting right, that I\u2019m not going to push that trade.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWhen you\u2019re thinking through different scenarios and have this golden idea. It usually clicks when you\u2019re like, this is it! And that\u2019s when you just have to go for it.\u201d<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIf you trust yourself as a trader and you have the stats to prove it, not every one of your trades is going to be successful, but in the long run, you will make money.\u201d <\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe reaction to the trade is very critical.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cYou have to be extremely reactive and extremely nimble.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cMistakes add up. If you cut your mistakes as quickly as possible, even when you really go for it, it could save you.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cYou\u2019re going to blow up if you hit a $1 breakout and allow the stock to fade down to $0.40 because you\u2019re stubborn.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIf you still feel like you\u2019re right, and they\u2019re working, and you let those run, those are what create those 4 or 5 moments.\u201d (referring to the huge success trades)<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIf you\u2019re not stubborn and take small scratches here &amp; there, those sorts of trades will not ruin your career.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cAs long as you trust your intuition and stick to your rules, you\u2019re going to put yourself in a great position to hit those home runs because you\u2019re never in a bad position overall financially or with the firm.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When referring to a strategy, what comes to Max\u2019s mind is \u201cHow can I use my edge to confirm or deny something that I\u2019m seeing on a chart or seeing with price action.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cMy strategy is how am I going to react at those inflection points and am I going to be quicker than the market to enter and exit?\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cDon\u2019t let the financial fears or size fears really impact you.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cDo your damn job.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cEveryone here starts with the same risk.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIf you keep putting out those great numbers and show that you\u2019re responsible, and that they can trust you, they will be a lot more willing to bump up your risk a lot quicker because they aren\u2019t being foolish with their money.\u201d (referring to the firm)\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIf they can trust you with their money, then they are more willing to bump you up.\u201d (referring to the firm)\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIt comes down to really keeping a responsible attitude.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cHaving very strict rules and behaving in a very professional way is what you grow into when you become successful.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cAs you become more mature, honing in on your values and structure is something that you need to adapt to in order to be successful.\u201d<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>From all of us at SMB Capital, train and trade well.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.smbtraining.com\/blog\/smb-disclosures?inf_contact_key=86e68ad95cfd2835f919c6dd5a8f153af651f238aa2edbb9c8b7cff03e0b16a0\">Important disclosures<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Mike Bellafiore is the Co-Founder of SMB Capital, a proprietary trading desk, and SMB Training, which provides\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/tradingworkshop.com\/\">trading education<\/a>\u00a0in stocks, options, and futures.
