id=\"target-id69d3bbf53c2af\" class=\"collapseomatic_content \">in today’s video we are going to talk<br \/>\nabout how professional traders evaluate<br \/>\nand place trades based on fresh news<br \/>\ncatalysts so stick around<br \/>\n[Music]\nI’m Stephen Spencer a co-founder of SMB<br \/>\nCapital a prop trading firm in New York<br \/>\nCity where we trade stocks futures and<br \/>\noptions in today’s video I will walk you<br \/>\nthrough two recent examples of large cap<br \/>\nstocks that reported earnings and how we<br \/>\nprepare it to trade them this video was<br \/>\ninspired by a recent question in the<br \/>\ncomments section on one of our youtube<br \/>\nvideos so I encourage you to ask<br \/>\nquestions and share trading insights in<br \/>\nthe comments section below our videos we<br \/>\nall will learn more together here are<br \/>\nthe game plan notes from our am meeting<br \/>\nthe first stop we are going to talk<br \/>\nabout is a DB Adobe in the game play<br \/>\nnotes I usually offer a few levels of<br \/>\ninterest that our potential support or<br \/>\nresistance and I will also provide one<br \/>\nor two highlights that caught my<br \/>\nattention from their earnings release in<br \/>\nthe case of Adobe what caught my<br \/>\nattention was the 25 percent<br \/>\nyear-over-year growth in subscription<br \/>\nrevenue that’s a strong number for a<br \/>\nlarge cap stock it is not unusual to see<br \/>\n20% plus growth and smaller companies by<br \/>\nand large larger companies will have<br \/>\nmuch lower growth rates usually below<br \/>\n10% but a strong year-over-year growth<br \/>\nrate alone is not enough to give me a<br \/>\nbullish bias on a stock I want to<br \/>\nunderstand on the higher time frame how<br \/>\nit is traded prior to the earnings<br \/>\nrelease so the first thing I do is<br \/>\nscroll back to a year ago to see where<br \/>\nit was traded I can compare how much the<br \/>\nstock has gone up in the last year<br \/>\nversus growth rate to make an informed<br \/>\njudgment whether large market players<br \/>\nwould be more likely to buy or sell the<br \/>\nshares then I’ll zoom in on a 30-minute<br \/>\nmulti week chart to see how people are<br \/>\npositions coming into the earnings<br \/>\nreleased for example I have a bullish<br \/>\nbias on a stock and it is sold off hard<br \/>\nprior to the earnings release I would<br \/>\nview that as another check in my fever<br \/>\nhas many people who sold will likely<br \/>\nhave sellers remorse and chase the stock<br \/>\nas it moves higher following the<br \/>\nearnings release as you can see in this<br \/>\ndaily chart Adobe was only up about 12%<br \/>\nfrom last fall’s high and therefore it<br \/>\nmakes sense based on strong year over<br \/>\nyear growth that it would be trading<br \/>\nhigher one of the things<br \/>\nthat I mentioned in our a meeting while<br \/>\nwe discussed the dhobi is that if a<br \/>\nstock is behaving in line with how my<br \/>\nanalysis indicated it should be trading<br \/>\nthere will be good risk or trades but<br \/>\nnothing great in the case of Adobe it is<br \/>\nacting in a way that I would expect<br \/>\nbased on strong year-over-year growth<br \/>\nand the gap higher so there will likely<br \/>\nbe a good opportunity to treat it but<br \/>\nonly what I would consider a normal risk<br \/>\naward and nothing earth-shattering as<br \/>\nyou can see it from the zoomed in<br \/>\nfive-minute chart<br \/>\nAdobe traded up to 317 after the market<br \/>\nclosed and reported earnings the next<br \/>\nmorning it’s trading above 312 in the<br \/>\npre market which you can see on the<br \/>\nright side of the chart which was above<br \/>\nthe pullback low in the after-hours so<br \/>\nfrom a purely price action standpoint we<br \/>\nwould consider this moderately bullish<br \/>\nif we look at the game plan notes you<br \/>\ncan see I’ve highlighted a few potential<br \/>\nsupport areas and only a single<br \/>\nresistance area which was the<br \/>\nafter-hours high when stocks are at<br \/>\ntheir all-time high there are no<br \/>\nresistance areas other than where the<br \/>\nstock trades after the catalyst<br \/>\ninitially in the after-hours my<br \/>\nexpectation based on the higher time<br \/>\nframe chart we reviewed in the size of<br \/>\nthe positive catalyst and additionally a<br \/>\nton of upgrades that we saw worst case<br \/>\nscenario is the stock seems to see some<br \/>\nprofit taking right on the open it so<br \/>\ncreed’s down a few dollars possibly to<br \/>\ns2 but more likely it will trade only to<br \/>\nask one and then make move higher<br \/>\nthrough the after-hours high of 317 we<br \/>\ndiscuss a few of the possible trading<br \/>\npatterns during the am meeting we do<br \/>\nthis very quickly as we need to discuss<br \/>\nfour to six stocks in about 15 minutes<br \/>\nthe process that we use to identify<br \/>\nthese stocks he’s part of the two-hour<br \/>\nfree workshop I spent 30 minutes on<br \/>\nstock selection and we also discuss in<br \/>\ndetail two of the lowest risk high<br \/>\nreward setups that we teach on our<br \/>\ntrading desk so if you have not watched<br \/>\nthe free workshop yet I highly recommend<br \/>\nyou check it out now by clicking on the<br \/>\nlink above or the link below the second<br \/>\nstock we’re gonna analyze is Costco cos<br \/>\nT this is another large cap company with<br \/>\nstrong growth so I’ll go through the<br \/>\nsame process as we did with Adobe<br \/>\nidentify the key support resistance<br \/>\nlevels based on recent price action<br \/>\ndevelop a bias based on the higher<br \/>\nframe versus the size of the catalyst<br \/>\nthat we see if we look at the daily<br \/>\nchart for cost we can see that on a<br \/>\npercentage basis it has gone up a lot<br \/>\nmore than Adobe in the past year it’s<br \/>\nmoved up from 240 to 300 which is about<br \/>\na 25% move when we look at the morning<br \/>\ngame plan notes we can see that even<br \/>\nthough it has strong sales and earnings<br \/>\ngrowth they don’t look nearly as<br \/>\nimpressive as size of the move that we<br \/>\nsaw in the past year and this is why I’m<br \/>\ninterested in being short the stock it’s<br \/>\ngone up 25 percent in the past year but<br \/>\nwe can see sales growth 5% earnings per<br \/>\nshare growth 10 percent from a bigger<br \/>\npicture perspective this is a stock in a<br \/>\nstrong uptrend and on the surface the<br \/>\nnumbers look good so my hope is with the<br \/>\nstock opening lower some people will<br \/>\ninitially buy it and it will spike up<br \/>\ninto an area to our resistance area from<br \/>\nthe morning gameplay notes and that it<br \/>\nwill offer us the best most favorable<br \/>\nrisk reward entry for the stock and if<br \/>\nnot then I’ll go to plan B in short at<br \/>\nlower prices I want to take a quick look<br \/>\nat the multi month 30-minute chart to<br \/>\nhighlight a couple of points cost has<br \/>\nfailed a few times you can see on the<br \/>\nchart above 300 since September and in<br \/>\nthe two weeks prior to earnings the<br \/>\nstock was bought in the 293 294 area<br \/>\nwhere it’s supported in late October and<br \/>\nearly November<br \/>\nthis chart shows pretty clearly the plan<br \/>\nB area to short the stock if we don’t<br \/>\nget it on our resistance areas right on<br \/>\nthe open so if it trades down not as<br \/>\nresistance we’ll go to plan B so you can<br \/>\nsee from the zoomed in chart here that<br \/>\nthe first move was down quickly it<br \/>\nflushed through s1 and then even s2 the<br \/>\ncost the first move is down it is very<br \/>\nlow probability I’ll have a chance to<br \/>\nshort it on my resistance area so I go<br \/>\nto plan B which is to short it as it<br \/>\napproached the earnings reaction low<br \/>\nfrom yesterday’s after-hours trading we<br \/>\ncan see that right there on the chart<br \/>\nit’s around 294 and so as it pops up<br \/>\ninto that that area I get short so<br \/>\nyou’re always gonna have a plan B and<br \/>\nusually a plan C stocks may go in the<br \/>\ndirection that your bias indicates<br \/>\nthey’re going to go but the path quite<br \/>\noften will not be the most likely path<br \/>\nbut will be<br \/>\nseveral that you’ve outlined in your<br \/>\ndetailed game plan before the market<br \/>\nopens as I said here we have to go to<br \/>\nplan B I want to give you an example of<br \/>\na stock with a negative catalyst that<br \/>\nhad a quick pop in the open where we<br \/>\nactually were able to trade it into our<br \/>\nresistance area here’s the chart of HD<br \/>\nit popped right on the open into 232 and<br \/>\nwe got short so we were able to short it<br \/>\non that quick pop right on the open most<br \/>\ntraders would view that as a riskier<br \/>\nentry because we entered a position<br \/>\nagainst the short-term momentum but for<br \/>\nexperienced traders who understand the<br \/>\ncatalyst as well as the key prices<br \/>\nentering against the momentum with a<br \/>\nplan is a very effective strategy but<br \/>\nregardless we need to prepare for many<br \/>\npossible price paths with their stocks<br \/>\nwe’re going to treat so to recap for you<br \/>\nwe identify the strongest points in an<br \/>\nearnings release we highlight them the<br \/>\npoints that analysts and large fund<br \/>\nmanagers will likely be focused on then<br \/>\nwe’ll look at a daily chart to judge the<br \/>\nlonger-term price action against the<br \/>\ndetails of the catalyst and finally<br \/>\nwe’ll look to see how traders and<br \/>\ninvestors have positioned themselves in<br \/>\nthe weeks prior to the catalyst release<br \/>\nall of these things combined give us a<br \/>\nedge as discretionary traders<br \/>\n<\/div>\n<a
