One question was about analyzing stocks right around the open, from the first minute to the first hour or so of trade. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Keeping with the live and interactive spirit of Trading Conversations, I asked users to give me a ticker or two and I would display how I analyze them around the open. The group chimed in with \u00a0$BABA and $CIEN. The concept I taught was one of quickly framing the intraday context of a stock with a tool called the \u201cOpening Swing\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Let\u2019s jump into the details. I define the Opening Swing as the first major swing high and swing low created by market participants after the open. This can be on whatever timeframe you operate in. For my examples, I used a 3min chart. It\u2019s a measure of the first \u201ctell\u201d of how strong a wave of buyers are, and a wave of sellers are. Mark these on your chart as the Opening Swing High, and Opening Swing Low. We\u2019ll use these references going forward.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-43750 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/www.smbtraining.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/diagram.png\" alt=\"diagram\" width=\"442\" height=\"311\" srcset=\"\/\/www.smbtraining.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/diagram.png 788w, \/\/www.smbtraining.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/diagram-300x211.png 300w, \/\/www.smbtraining.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/diagram-768x541.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 442px) 100vw, 442px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Once we see the two swings, we define the range from the swing low to the swing high as the Opening Swing. We can now use this as a contextual reference to gauge trading in relation to the Opening Swing going forward. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Let\u2019s look at the two examples:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Example 1: $BABA<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This was a really good example of using the Opening Swing as a reference to frame what\u2019s unfolding on the day. As you can see from the screenshot from the webinar, I highlighted the Opening Swing High and Low with the blue rectangles. Then what do we see? We see price get below the Opening Swing Low, and sellers defend that area on retests. This is a nice heads up that short term sellers are currently in control and I would be looking for short only trades until this situation changed.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.smbtraining.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/BABA-1.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-43764 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/www.smbtraining.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/BABA-1-1024x593.png\" alt=\"BABA\" width=\"654\" height=\"379\" srcset=\"\/\/www.smbtraining.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/BABA-1-1024x593.png 1024w, \/\/www.smbtraining.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/BABA-1-300x174.png 300w, \/\/www.smbtraining.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/BABA-1-768x444.png 768w, \/\/www.smbtraining.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/BABA-1.png 1538w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 654px) 100vw, 654px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Example 2: $CIEN <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This stock provided a different example for us. Shown in the screenshot below, the Opening Swing was put in place, and buyers ripped higher through the Opening Swing High. This is a situation where I would not be looking to fade this move higher due to this early strength in the stock.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.smbtraining.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/CIEN-1.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-43765\" src=\"http:\/\/www.smbtraining.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/CIEN-1-1024x584.png\" alt=\"CIEN\" width=\"594\" height=\"339\" srcset=\"\/\/www.smbtraining.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/CIEN-1-1024x584.png 1024w, \/\/www.smbtraining.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/CIEN-1-300x171.png 300w, \/\/www.smbtraining.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/CIEN-1-768x438.png 768w, \/\/www.smbtraining.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/CIEN-1.png 1563w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 594px) 100vw, 594px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Keep in mind that these two examples were pulled from the same trading day. One was a good short opportunity, one a good long.
