And then much more importantly,\u201dWhat can I do between now and then to prepare.\u201d\u00a0 At our firm, we send out a reading list for incoming traders to best prepare them.\u00a0 Here is that list, with an explanation of how it can help your trading.<\/p>\n

1. The Talent Code<\/a> <\/i>by Dan Coyle.\u00a0 There are four ingredients for being good at anything, thus trading.\u00a0 Domain knowledge, critical feedback, sustained energy, and purposeful practice.\u00a0 Train with these ingredients to find trading success.<\/p>\n

2. Golf if Not a Game of Perfect<\/i> by Bob Rotella.\u00a0 Confidence trading a $GOOG or $SPY is something built and essential.\u00a0 This book<\/a>, written by a top sports golf psychologist, helps you learn to build real confidence.<\/p>\n

3. The Daily Trading Coach<\/i><\/a>, by Dr. Brett Steenbarger.\u00a0 Dr. Steenbarger is the Coach K of coaching in the trading world.\u00a0 TraderFeed<\/a>, his daily blog, is a must read for the serious trader and a treasure to the trading community.\u00a0 This book offers 101 tips to help you improve your mental game as a trader, the 800 pound gorilla on every trading station.<\/p>\n

4. Bounce<\/i> by Matthew Syed.\u00a0 This book<\/a> studies why a small cluster of young lads in England became the best table tennis players in the world.\u00a0 This read emphasizes the importance of great coaching for elite performance.\u00a0 For example, today on our desk we had behind door discussions with some on our desk about missed opportunities in $INTC and $VLTC.\u00a0 Critical feedback from coaches is essential for trading improvement.<\/p>\n

5. Drive<\/i> by Daniel Pink<\/a>.\u00a0 When we were young our parents preached, \u201cFind something you love and do it.\u00a0 The rest will take care of itself.\u201d\u00a0 Dan offers a better thought, \u201cDo what you do<\/a>.\u201d\u00a0 If you are not trading, then how can you really love trading?\u00a0 In today\u2019s world the barrier for entry into trading is almost nothing.\u00a0 Paper trade, open a small account, back-test.\u00a0 But you should be trading if you love trading.\u00a0 Do what you do!<\/p>\n

6. Flow<\/i> by Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi<\/a>.\u00a0 Flow<\/a> is the state of optimum performance-\u00a0 when you do what you truly love and get lost in the process.\u00a0 When I think of the new trader, I wonder: Can you become a great trader if you do not experience the state of flow while trading?<\/p>\n

7. Talent is Overrated<\/i> by Geoff Colvin<\/a>. You do need talent to become a successful trader.\u00a0 But there are more important things than talent, like the hours you put in practicing and studying trading<\/a> after the close.<\/p>\n

8. Thinking Fast and Slow<\/i> by Daniel Kahneman<\/a>.\u00a0 This is a helpful book to find your best trading time frame.\u00a0 Professor Kahneman argues most of us think either better quickly or slowly.\u00a0 If you are a very fast thinker than scalping high beta names like $NFLX, $TSLA $AMZN and $BIIB\u00a0 might be your game.\u00a0 If you are analytical, then macro trading<\/a> might be best for you.<\/p>\n

9. Mindset<\/i> by Carol Dweck<\/a>.\u00a0 The most important attribute for trading success, is improving each day.\u00a0 Markets change.\u00a0 Strategies work and then don\u2019t.\u00a0 Traders must embrace getting better each day over PnL.\u00a0 This is how you become great.\u00a0 This is how you sustain.<\/p>\n

10. The Power of Habit<\/em>, by Charles Duhigg<\/a>.\u00a0 Your PnL is the reflection of the best practices you turn into habit as a trader.\u00a0 This book teaches traders how to build excellent habits.<\/p>\n

11. One Good Trade<\/i><\/a>, Mike Bellafiore. The day I went to City Hall for my marriage license, I met with a prominent managing partner at a large Australian prop desk.\u00a0 He had read One Good Trade<\/i> and wanted to meet while visiting NYC.\u00a0 He said something I will never forget and perhaps has become the legacy of this book, \u201cI was going to write a book.\u00a0 But then I read One Good Trade <\/i>and you had already written mine.\u201d\u00a0 One Good Trade<\/i> has become globally the go-to-book for many prop shops- the book you are encouraged to read when you are beginning your career as a proprietary trader.<\/p>\n

12. Technical Analysis on Multiple Time Frames<\/i>, Brian Shannon<\/a>.\u00a0 Straightforward advice on how to use technical analysis to gain trading edge.<\/p>\n

13. Peak Performance Trading and Investing<\/i><\/a> by Bruce Bower.\u00a0 An experienced, hedge fund trader who has also read everything on trading\/investing offers the latest important contribution to the trading community with this new book.\u00a0 Tap into the principles of elite performance to trade\/invest better.<\/p>\n
