Below is his latest post for the SMB trading community.***** \u2014 Editor\u2019s Note<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Ah we have all faced it as traders\u2026the fear of regret.\u00a0 It comes in many forms and a few examples will remind us of just how often it occurs.\u00a0 Let\u2019s say the trader is reviewing two possible stock trades.\u00a0 Both stock A and stock B have a similar set up.\u00a0 The trader chooses stock A.\u00a0 Stock A goes nowhere.\u00a0 In fact, Stock A declines and hits\u00a0his loss target.\u00a0 Stock B, on the other hand, makes a considerable move\u00a0<em>without<\/em>\u00a0him.\u00a0\u00a0The trader\u00a0regrets choosing stock A over stock B. Instead of making money\u00a0he loses money.\u00a0\u00a0 How about this one?\u00a0\u00a0The trader\u00a0analyzes a trading opportunity\u00a0calculating both profit and loss targets.\u00a0\u00a0He decides to risk\u00a0his money. The stock in question hits his loss target and he exits the trade as planned only to see\u00a0the stock\u00a0moving in the previously desired direction to\u00a0the previously determined profit target\u00a0<em>without<\/em>\u00a0him.\u00a0\u00a0He regrets making the decision to exit the trade.\u00a0 And another example much like the last one.\u00a0\u00a0The trader\u00a0determines a profit and loss target for a\u00a0trade.\u00a0 The trade moves in\u00a0his desired direction\u00a0hitting\u00a0his profit target\u00a0as\u00a0he banks\u00a0his money.\u00a0 Perfect.\u00a0 Or is it?\u00a0\u00a0He now watches as the stock\u00a0he exited continues to move 20% higher\u00a0<em>without<\/em>\u00a0him.\u00a0\u00a0He regrets exiting too early.<\/p>\n<p>All of the above examples cause regret about\u00a0<em>past<\/em>\u00a0decisions\u00a0but it is the fear of regret that\u00a0can\u00a0adversely affect\u00a0<em>future<\/em>\u00a0decisions.\u00a0It\u2019s the decisions about the future, based on the fears generated in the past that can cause the trader to make decisions that he would not otherwise make\u2026decisions that may not be in his best interest.\u00a0 \u00a0For example, the trader above who leaves 20% profit on the table after exiting at his profit target\u00a0will recall that last trade when the next trade hits a pre-determined profit target. He decides to hold on longer for greater potential profit only to see the\u00a0stock\u00a0reverse hard against\u00a0him culminating in a break even trade, or even worse, a loss.\u00a0 The fear of regret (based on the past) adversely affected his decision making process (in the present).<\/p>\n<p>While I could write a chapter\u00a0on the examples of regret; I could write a book on the fear of regret.\u00a0\u00a0Basically, the problem stems from our recall of the last experience which can adversely affect our next decision (like the last example). How do we handle this fear?\u00a0 What is the solution to the problem? The following articles may provide us with a few solid answers.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn investing, the fear of regret can make investors either risk averse or motivate them to take greater risks.\u201d (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.investopedia.com\/terms\/r\/regrettheory.asp\">Investopedia<\/a>)<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe can become so paralyzed by fear of regret that we fail to act at all; we think any action might be the\u00a0<em>wrong<\/em>\u00a0action.\u201d (Rebecca Fraser-Thill via Working Self)<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe think we are shielding ourselves from the harm of having something so negative come to pass, when in reality we are exaggerating in our eagerness to avoid a regretful result.\u201d (Amy Sundburg via Practical Fear Spirit)<\/p>\n<p>\u201cContrary to disappointment, which is experienced when a negative outcome happens relative to prior expectations, regret is strongly associated with a feeling of responsibility for the choice that has been made.\u201d (Michenaud and Solnik)<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe fear of regret promotes procrastination.\u201d (<a href=\"http:\/\/news.google.com\/newspapers?nid=1893&amp;dat=19981207&amp;id=5ZEkAAAAIBAJ&amp;sjid=w9wFAAAAIBAJ&amp;pg=2857,5920825\">Chet Currier via Southeast Missourian<\/a>)<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe found that people are less likely to invest in a manner in which they had experienced regret, i.e., the experience of regret with a particular type of investment.\u201d (Bailey and Kinerson)<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe emotionally-charged decisions made because of regret lead to worse outcomes for investors, with poor returns resulting from regret-based stock orders.\u201d (Deusker, Pan, Weisbenner, and Wu)<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDifferent paths to the same outcome can lead to the consideration of very different counterfactual alternatives and thus induce very different levels of regret.\u201d (Gilovich and Medvec)<\/p>\n<p>I trust the above will help\u00a0us all begin our journey to understand and accept regret\u2019s role in our decision making process; thereby, enhancing our future performance.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #222222;\"><strong>David Blair<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>THE CROSSHAIRS TRADER<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.thecrosshairstrader.com\/\">www.thecrosshairstrader.com<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>no relevant postions.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>*****David Blair, The Crosshairs Trader, is a blogger\/trader\/educator who does a wonderful job of sharing research on elite performance and how it relates to trading.
