Below is his latest post for the SMB trading community.***** \u2014 Editor\u2019s Note<\/em><\/p>\n<p>How much control do you have over the success of your next trade?\u00a0 Before you answer that question what will you base your answer on?\u00a0 Will the probability of success hinge upon a repeatable pattern, a streak much like the recent\u00a0<a style=\"color: #1155cc;\" href=\"http:\/\/money.cnn.com\/2014\/04\/29\/investing\/stocks-markets\/\" target=\"_blank\">\u201c<span class=\"aBn\" data-term=\"goog_155511537\"><span class=\"aQJ\">Tuesday<\/span><\/span>\u00a0Effect\u201d?<\/a>\u00a0 Is it based on the success of a technical indicator you recently began using that has produced X number of winners in a row?\u00a0 Maybe your answer will be based on some new guru you are following who thus far has been accurate on the calls you decided to follow.\u00a0 In all of these cases your answer may be the result an illusion\u2026an illusion of control.<\/p>\n<p>The illusion of control is the tendency for people to believe they have control over, or at the least have the ability to influence, an outcome that they demonstrably do not.\u00a0 This is most often the case under conditions of uncertainty where innumerable possibilities exist due to innumerable influences.\u00a0 No where is this more prevalent than in the stock market where future price action is based on the innumerable\u00a0decisions\u00a0of innumerable participants every minute of every day, oftentimes based on information known and unknown at the time of the investment or trading decisions.\u00a0 You may want to read the previous sentence again just to make sure you understand the complicated nature of the markets before you make that next trading decision under the illusion of control.\u00a0 Understanding our lack of control over the outcome of our next trade should reinforce for us our need to work on how we manage our trading (e.g. risk parameters, process vs outcome, acceptance of the unknown, etc)\u2026something that we do have control over.\u00a0\u00a0 The following resources can help.<\/p>\n<p>The Illusion of Control defined (<a style=\"color: #1155cc;\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Illusion_of_control\" target=\"_blank\">Wikipedia<\/a>)<\/p>\n<p>The Illusion of Control (<a style=\"color: #1155cc;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.nasdaq.com\/article\/the-illusion-of-control-cm349605\" target=\"_blank\">Nasdaq<\/a>)<\/p>\n<p>It is OK to be flexible when things are out of our control (<a style=\"color: #1155cc;\" href=\"http:\/\/psychcentral.com\/blog\/archives\/2011\/10\/03\/the-illusion-of-control\/\" target=\"_blank\">PsychCentral<\/a>)<\/p>\n<p>Not being in control is no reason to give up (<a style=\"color: #1155cc;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.psychologytoday.com\/blog\/emotional-sobriety\/201208\/the-illusion-control\" target=\"_blank\">Psychology Today<\/a>)<\/p>\n<p>Do not allow the illusion of control to bruise your self-esteem (<a style=\"color: #1155cc;\" href=\"http:\/\/mappingignorance.org\/2013\/10\/22\/the-illusion-of-control-cognitive-bias-or-self-esteem-problem\/\" target=\"_blank\">Mapping Ignorance<\/a>)<\/p>\n<p>The Illusion of control when managing risks (<a style=\"color: #1155cc;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.econ.ucsb.edu\/papers\/wp12-03.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">University of California, Santa Barbara<\/a>)<\/p>\n<p>Suffering from self-delusion (<a style=\"color: #1155cc;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.spring.org.uk\/2013\/02\/the-illusion-of-control-are-there-benefits-to-being-self-deluded.php\" target=\"_blank\">Psy Blog<\/a>)<\/p>\n<p>The illusion of control and its relation to stock market panic (<a style=\"color: #1155cc;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bostonfed.org\/economic\/ppdp\/2012\/ppdp1207.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">Boston Fed<\/a>)<\/p>\n<p>When making financial decisions we can fall under the illusion of control (<a style=\"color: #1155cc;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.hcplive.com\/physicians-money-digest\/blogs\/my-money-md\/03-2014\/Imaginary-Control-and-Financial-Decisions\" target=\"_blank\">Physicians Money Digest<\/a>)<\/p>\n<p>What traders CAN control (<a style=\"color: #1155cc;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.traderslog.com\/trading-emotions\/\" target=\"_blank\">Traders Log<\/a>)<\/p>\n<p><strong>David Blair<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>THE CROSSHAIRS TRADER<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.thecrosshairstrader.com\/\">www.thecrosshairstrader.com<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>no relevant postions.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>*****David Blair, The Crosshairs Trader, is a blogger\/trader\/educator who does a wonderful job of sharing research on elite performance and how it relates to trading.
