Here are the messages time ordered. The original reason for the SPY long was a combination of how quickly we had moved from SPY 165 to 161 and my long positions showing relative strength to the SPY. Many times when I see this type of divergence a bounce in the index will follow.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.smbtraining.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/looking-for-bounce-1.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-28106\" alt=\"looking for bounce 1\" src=\"http:\/\/www.smbtraining.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/looking-for-bounce-1.png\" width=\"606\" height=\"68\" srcset=\"\/\/www.smbtraining.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/looking-for-bounce-1.png 606w, \/\/www.smbtraining.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/looking-for-bounce-1-300x33.png 300w, \/\/www.smbtraining.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/looking-for-bounce-1-250x28.png 250w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 606px) 100vw, 606px\" \/><\/a><br \/>\n<strong>Arrow 1<\/strong>&#8211;If stocks aren&#8217;t making new lows with the SPY perhaps it is just the machines pounding the indexes and when they relent the indexes will catch up with the individual stocks leading to a bounce<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.smbtraining.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/looking-for-bounce-2-avg-cost.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-28107\" alt=\"looking for bounce 2 avg cost\" src=\"http:\/\/www.smbtraining.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/looking-for-bounce-2-avg-cost.png\" width=\"608\" height=\"67\" srcset=\"\/\/www.smbtraining.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/looking-for-bounce-2-avg-cost.png 608w, \/\/www.smbtraining.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/looking-for-bounce-2-avg-cost-300x33.png 300w, \/\/www.smbtraining.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/looking-for-bounce-2-avg-cost-250x27.png 250w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 608px) 100vw, 608px\" \/><\/a><br \/>\n<strong>Arrow 2&#8211;<\/strong>averaged into my position as the SPY dropped back to 161<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.smbtraining.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/looking-for-bounce-3.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-28108\" alt=\"looking for bounce 3\" src=\"http:\/\/www.smbtraining.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/looking-for-bounce-3.png\" width=\"614\" height=\"82\" srcset=\"\/\/www.smbtraining.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/looking-for-bounce-3.png 614w, \/\/www.smbtraining.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/looking-for-bounce-3-300x40.png 300w, \/\/www.smbtraining.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/looking-for-bounce-3-250x33.png 250w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 614px) 100vw, 614px\" \/><\/a><br \/>\n<strong>Arrow 3<\/strong>&#8211;Bounces should have force. I have been long for more than 30 minutes and I have not seen the aggressive type of buying that is typical of the first stage of a bounce. The slow steady up move to 161.20 is more indicative of a retracement that traders are happy to short. I sold about 25% of my position into this retracement and was prepared to sell more with a powerful down move.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.smbtraining.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/looking-for-bounce-4.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-28109\" alt=\"looking for bounce 4\" src=\"http:\/\/www.smbtraining.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/looking-for-bounce-4.png\" width=\"604\" height=\"68\" srcset=\"\/\/www.smbtraining.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/looking-for-bounce-4.png 604w, \/\/www.smbtraining.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/looking-for-bounce-4-300x33.png 300w, \/\/www.smbtraining.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/looking-for-bounce-4-250x28.png 250w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 604px) 100vw, 604px\" \/><\/a><br \/>\n<strong>Arrow 4<\/strong>&#8211;This retracement was even weaker than the prior move up to 161.20 so I decided to sell most of my remaining position taking about a 20 cent loss. At this point I was beginning to think about how I could transition to the short side in case the market failed at recent support. This is a tricky position for a trader as it can be very difficult to move from one side of the market to the other and execute well. I was down to 10% of my original position and in wait and see mode.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.smbtraining.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/looking-for-bounce-5.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-28110\" alt=\"looking for bounce 5\" src=\"http:\/\/www.smbtraining.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/looking-for-bounce-5.png\" width=\"601\" height=\"68\" srcset=\"\/\/www.smbtraining.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/looking-for-bounce-5.png 601w, \/\/www.smbtraining.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/looking-for-bounce-5-300x33.png 300w, \/\/www.smbtraining.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/looking-for-bounce-5-250x28.png 250w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 601px) 100vw, 601px\" \/><\/a><br \/>\n<strong>Arrow 5<\/strong>&#8211;Instead of rolling over the market got above 161 which was the key support level in the first hour. I watched as the 161.01 bid got pounded and wouldn&#8217;t drop. I bought back my position at 161.02 and placed a stop at 160.98. The 161.01 bid never dropped and SPY started to grind higher.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.smbtraining.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/looking-four-bounce-6.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-28112\" alt=\"looking four bounce 6\" src=\"http:\/\/www.smbtraining.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/looking-four-bounce-6.png\" width=\"607\" height=\"70\" srcset=\"\/\/www.smbtraining.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/looking-four-bounce-6.png 607w, \/\/www.smbtraining.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/looking-four-bounce-6-300x34.png 300w, \/\/www.smbtraining.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/looking-four-bounce-6-250x28.png 250w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 607px) 100vw, 607px\" \/><\/a><br \/>\nAs we approached VWAP I scaled out of my position as this move was the slow grinding type and not &#8220;bounce mode&#8221;. I let traders on the desk know this was the spot to begin initiating shorts against 161.40 for a re-test of the morning lows.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.smbtraining.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/looking-for-bounce-71.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-28113\" alt=\"looking for bounce 7\" src=\"http:\/\/www.smbtraining.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/looking-for-bounce-71.png\" width=\"605\" height=\"70\" srcset=\"\/\/www.smbtraining.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/looking-for-bounce-71.png 605w, \/\/www.smbtraining.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/looking-for-bounce-71-300x34.png 300w, \/\/www.smbtraining.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/looking-for-bounce-71-250x28.png 250w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 605px) 100vw, 605px\" \/><\/a><br \/>\n<strong>Arrow 6<\/strong>&#8211;As soon as we ticked lower from VWAP I got flat.
