My unprepared interview with SMB<\/strong>
\nThis is my second time in New York but the first time to actually took the time to look around. It is one of the most fascinating city I been to. I feel like everybody walks with a sense of purpose, I can taste their hungry energy to make the big bucks.<\/p>\nI have been to almost all the famous places but it is a lot of walking. I was somewhat disappointed with Wall Street. I imagined it to be a huge glamorous street, instead it was as narrow as my street back home. The bull wasn’t even on Wall Street!! I walk from the top to bottom of Wall Street, I was like where the F***? It was on Broadway, which was the next intersection. Anyways, it was worth it. I took many great pictures and grab the bull’s balls several times.<\/p>\n
Anyways, touching bull’s balls wasn’t the main reason I came here. I came here to visit Prop firms, mainly SMB Capital. I was excited, and I don’t get excited easily these days. On Monday 3\/21\/11, I have scheduled a visit at SMB at 11:30am. I went to find the place the day before so I know exactly how to get there. It was a shiny classy black building overseeing the Hudson River. What an awesome spot. Then, it was Monday and it was raining. I got my business casual on and I got there 45 minutes early because I don’t want to risk anything that blocks my way. I was sitting there then Steve (co-founder) walked in. I can’t believe it, so I put my hands up to attempt a wave. Ignored, he walked right back into the office. Oh well, I hope I can meet him next time. The receptionist was hilarious……. I liked her.<\/p>\n
At 11:25a.m., BTY led me to see Rooy the guy that was going to show me around. One of the nicest laid back guy I’ve met. He was telling me about his head trader name is G man, and that he thought it was funny that my name is Chi Man. We were talking then he told me, you have an interview scheduled at 4 p.m. today didn’t you know?….. All I know is I was completely unprepared for this and had I not visit the office, I would have missed an interview that meant everything to me. I didn’t have anything with me, everything I needed was back home. I don’t even have a jacket for my suit nor do I own one. I refused to buy one because I thought I look silly.<\/p>\n
I took the subway to Chinatown to eat with my friend, and the whole time I was trying to think of questions Bella might ask me. Then, I finally went to buy a jacket. I didn’t care how silly I looked because I want to give them my full respect. I got there half hour early. The time arrived, Carlton led me to the waiting room. There were two other applicants. They both had fancy folders with them with resumes and notebook and me on the other hand had only an old man umbrella. One guy was for the intern position and the other was competing with me. They both trade option. The intern guy was energetic, he said hi hows it going to every person that was in his sight. He seem to know his stuff though, and he is only a junior in college. The other guy, he was kinda dull and monotone. Just what I like.<\/p>\n
Before the interview we attended one of their training session. I watched their SMB university every Sunday, and I couldn’t believe I was in there! I loved it, I enjoyed every second of it. The stock in play they went over was a Tobacco stock Lorillard (LO).<\/p>\n
It was interview time. Bella stepped out of his office goes “who is up first for interview”. The guy I was competing with quickly volunteered. It was a smart move, It shows that you’re gutsy or whatever. It was about five minutes in then he came out. His face was flushing red. That tells me two things. It is either Bella was giving him a hard time or he was just nervous. I was hoping for the latter. Then, I was up. I was excited to finally shake his hand even though I wasn’t prepared. He knew about my situation that it was my second time coming up to the office because I didn’t get notified about the email. Hopefully, that would save me a couple points. I thought Bella was quite easy going but at the same time all about business. I was real nervous. I had a lot of hesitation and it was real unsmooth. That always happens to me, I can feel my heart pounding and my body shaking. I would just draw a blank and wouldn’t know what to say. I thought I responded the questions terribly, and probably not the answer Bella was looking for. I hate interviews, I just want to jump right to trading. The interview only lasted about 5 – 10 mins and ended with a hand shake with a smile on his face saying Chi Man right? I had a good feeling about that.<\/p>\n
The next day, I had another scheduled visit with (name deleted) Group. They have pretty good rating on investimonials. My friend wanted to see what a trading office looks like so I brought him along with me. We got there and I can’t believe how small their office are with barely any traders. I was somewhat disappointed, but they had everything they need to make the big bucks and that is all it matters. He ran over the information about his firm….. But I didn’t feel comfortable there. The visit made me finalize my decision. It is either SMB or back to HK for an ibank position. As of now, I’m just waiting for the rejection from SMB. Not to sound pessimistic but just anticipating the worst case scenario. Rejected or not, I will continue to work on my game and be more prepared the next time I step into SMB’s office.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
